The Mid Year Freak Out – Book Tag!

Picture1.png

Thanks to Shanah at Bionic Book Worm for tagging me! I’ve fallen behind on tags, but this one looked like a lot of fun and I had the time, so I couldn’t resist doing it right away!

1 – THE BEST BOOK YOU’VE READ SO FAR IN 2017

29044

This is hard!!! I’m tempted to name several, but I’m going to force myself to go with one, and that’s The Secret History. It was the very first book I read this year, and I did not mean to set the bar for every other book to come in 2017 but I guess I did. I ADORE this book. It excels in every category for me: writing, character, plot, general atmosphere of beauty and tragedy. It’s awful and fantastic and I’ll love it forever.

2 – YOUR FAVOURITE SEQUEL THIS YEAR

20764879

I’m tempted to name the Lunar Chronicles, but my heart is calling out for A Gathering of Shadows by V.E. Schwab. It’s my favorite book in the Shades of Magic series, and I just loved it as the middle book of a trilogy. I had so much fun reading this book, far more than the first, and I love how it expanded the story and developed the characters. It just screams “awesome sequel” to me.

3 – A NEW RELEASE THAT YOU HAVEN’T READ BUT REALLY WANT TO

32571395.jpg

I’m really intrigued by this book. Basically (from what I know) it’s about five kids who go into detention and four come out alive. How??? Why??? What?? WHAT is going on in this high school?? Sounds like my kind of mystery.

4 – MOST ANTICIPATED RELEASE FOR THE SECOND HALF OF THE YEAR

28421168.jpg

Right now I’m pretty excited about this. I’ll literally take anything Marissa Meyer has to offer me.

5 – YOUR BIGGEST DISAPPOINTMENT

18743370.jpg

Nothing this year has broken my heart, but I’m disappointed that I wasted my money on this one. Front Lines is about an alternate history of World War II in which girls are drafted into the army. I was majorly bored and not impressed.

6 – BIGGEST SURPRISE OF THE YEAR

11235712

A no brainer! I’d always secretly disliked it from afar and then one day I decided to give it a try and BAM true love.

7 – FAVOURITE NEW TO YOU OR DEBUT AUTHOR

See above.

I’ve read all Marissa Meyer’s books this year and love them all, and I am thoroughly convinced she is a genius storyteller. Her books are just so much FUN. Hence, why I’m looking forward to Renegades. I’ll take all the Marissa Meyer I can get.

8 – YOUR NEW FICTIONAL CRUSH

22055262

I don’t know what it is about Kell…he’s so brooding and moody and harsh but ?? I love him? I’m 100% positive he would not care for me at all, lol. Second place goes to Prince Kai from The Lunar Chronicles. He’s such a sweet and respectful royal gentleman. Or maybe I just like guys that have a lot of sass.

9 – NEW FAVOURITE CHARACTER

13206900

Princess Winter hands down. I love her for her goodness and sweetness and for sticking to her resolutions no matter what, despite of all the oppression she’s been raised under and because of it. Even when she could be deemed weak, I love the power in her use of words and kindness. And I love her sense of humor. It’s a bit subtle, a bit dry, but it made me laugh. Looovee.

10 – A BOOK THAT MADE YOU CRY

1971304.jpg

Okay, I think I said in a recent post this book made me cry, but now that I think about it I’m not sure if I actually did cry, BUT it definitely made me really sad. I love it. But otherwise, no other books have made me cry this year.

11 – A BOOK THAT MADE YOU HAPPY

13206760

Okay, this book isn’t like, a fluffy happy read, but I remember finishing it and being satisfied and happy and just smiling, and I literally texted my best friend “BOOKS MAKE ME SO HAPPY.” This book made me so grateful that I like…have the ability to read? And that I love to read? And have access to any and all books? I can be really sentimental, and I finished this at like 2 am and I was emotional (and it’s a really a great book).

12 – YOUR FAVOURITE BOOK TO MOVIE ADAPTATION THAT YOU’VE SEEN THIS YEAR

So I saw the movie adaptation of Everything Everything, but I didn’t read the book, so I can’t really judge on a comparison level. But the movie was okay! I didn’t love it, but it was nice to just go to the movies and see something relatively pleasant.

13 – FAVOURITE BOOK POST YOU’VE PUBLISHED THIS YEAR

Honestly I don’t think I have one. This post has been fun!

14 – THE MOST BEAUTIFUL BOOK YOU HAVE BOUGHT/RECEIVED THIS YEAR

18166936.jpg

I find this one very pretty! Haven’t read it yet but it’s on my shelf.

15 – WHAT ARE SOME BOOKS THAT YOU NEED TO READ BY THE END OF THE YEAR

These three immediately come to mind. The first two were recommended to me by Rachel at pace, amore, libri and they definitely appeal to my darker tastes that really haven’t been represented well in this post, but I want read more books like these! The Female of the Species is also no picnic from what I’ve heard, but I’m super intrigued and it’s been on my shelf for a while.

I tag:

Rachel –  pace, amore, libri

Chelsea – Spotlight on Stories

James – This is My Truth Now

Birdie – Birdie Bookworm

Kristen – Kristen Kraves Books

And you, if you think it looks fun!! No pressure to anyone tagged 🙂

  1. What a wonderful list! I really want to read “One of Us is Lying” as well! My inner “Breakfast Club” love is making it even harder to restrain myself…since I have SO many other books I can read right now…Renegades also looks appealing!

      • It gives me SO much anxiety to choose on a book to read…it’s rather pathetic to be frank ha-ha! I just want the ability to read them all in one go! I miss high school days where I had so much time for reading!

      • I know!!! Sometimes I get jealous of people who are really fast readers and the amount of books they’re able to read in short amounts of time. I can’t keep up with all the new releases and the ones that have been on my TBR for years! And I know, right? I had so much more time when I was younger! And I think I wasted a lot of it on TV and whatnot, lol.

  2. I’m literally halfway through doing this tag right now, but no one officially tagged me so this is the perfect excuse. Thanks!!!

Ahhhh I can’t wait to hear your thoughts on Burial Rites and Villains. I am (clearly) all about that dark fiction. I’ve heard good things about the Female of the Species too! And I really need to reread The Secret History. I read it a couple of years ago and it made such a strong impression on me. Those characters haunted me for weeks and weeks.

    • That’s so funny! Lol perfect timing.

I read a lot more dark fiction before I started blogging and got caught up in all the YA stuff on here. Before I started this blog I didn’t even realize that YA was such a huge market.
Now my TBR is full of a lot of YA, but I need more adult fiction of the murdery and historical kind. At least that’s where my mood has taken me this month, ha. I need to go check out your post!

      • Honestly the reason I can’t get into YA is because most of it isn’t dark enough for me. I mean, I don’t need everything to be endlessly depressing without a single flicker of hope, but I do like books that deal with heavy topics in a realistic way. And YA does tackle a lot of serious topics, but I feel like a lot of it is resolved in such a neat and clean way that it puts me off. Which isn’t a criticism of the genre – it’s just not for me. Though I would definitely be open to reading more dark YA, it definitely does exist, I’ve just gotta hunt for it!

And I’m the same way with mysteries/thrillers – I hardly read any before blogging, but now I always see so much buzz about the latest ones I let the curiosity get the better of me and I end up reading a ton of them. And I do like them, but I need to make more time for other genres.

      • That’s a very fair assessment of YA. I like a happy ending, but when I do think a YA book should have a sadder ending usually it doesn’t take that route. Though it makes sense that younger people should have more uplifting stories I suppose.

Thrillers and mysteries are so easy to get addicted to. On my favorites is the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo series, I read that a few years ago and I don’t think I ever sped through a series so fast, I was so hooked. But since I thrillers can be a bit heavy like that I do tend to give some space between reading them, but when I do they’re so fun.

  5. Hi. Thank you so much for tagging me. I appreciate it. I will work on this later today or tomorrow. It looks very fun.

I enjoyed The Secret History. At first, I wasn’t into it, but I tried it again, starting from the beginning, and then it clicked. Loved the plot. Disliked the characters. But I believe we were supposed to dislike them! 😛

    • You’re welcome! The Secret History is a very slow moving book, so I can definitely understand taking some time to get into it. And yeah, I don’t think we’re supposed to like the characters! They were so awful! Not great people, but great characters.

  6. Oh man, I loooove the Shades of Magic series. I ordered Conjuring of Light today. I’m also super excited for Renegades. I’m not even sure why, because I wasn’t crazy about Lunar Chronicles. Something about it just makes me want it.

Thanks for the tag! Looks like fun!

      • You’re welcome! I hope you enjoy doing it 🙂
It looks like it was a fund tag; I just need to make time for it since I’m at the beach! I snuck my IPad with me while we are sitting out, and my hubby keeps giving me evil looks, lol! Not sure if it is because I’m on it or not getting in the water! But the water is freezing they said, so I’m just fine, lol!!

      • Yes! Definitely! I stuck my toe in and then went back under the umbrella to read! I almost finished a book before it was time to go get ready for our dinner reservations 🙂 That is much better time spent than freezing or getting all wet and sandy!!

  9. Thank you so much for the tag! This looks like a lot of fun and I will definitely be doing it at some point. I love the Shades of Magic series so much and I’m completely with you when it comes to crushing on Kell! Something about how serious but good-hearted he is I just find so endearing!
