THESE were DIFFICULT to choose. I could probably debate over this post for hours, but in the end I had to go with some of these. I’m not promising anything inspiration here, just things that really punched me in the gut when I read them and that I’ve thought about for a long time I’ve finished the book. So let’s go!
“What an impossible and miraculous and hideous thing this was. An ugly plan hatched by an ugly boy now dreamt into ugly life. From dream to reality. How appropriate it was that Ronan, left to his own devices, manifested beautiful cars and beautiful birds and tenderhearted brothers, while Adam, when given the power, manifested a filthy string of perverse murders.”
LISTEN. I love this quote because I love Adam and Ronan and I love comparing and contrasting them and I love Adam’s inner ruminations and analyses of himself and Ronan as they develop, and this one just…HURTS ME. I love how this quote is written, and it’s from one of my favorite scenes in the whole of the series. I could write a dissertation comparing and contrasting Adam and Ronan.
Lightly men talk of saying what they mean. Often when he was teaching me to write in Greek the Fox would say, ‘Child, to say the very thing you really mean, the whole of it, nothing more or less or other than what you really mean; that’s the whole art and joy of words.’
A glib saying. When the time comes to you at which you will be forced at last to utter the speech which has lain at the center of your soul for years which you have, all that time, idiot-like, been saying over and over, you’ll not talk about the joy of words. I saw well why the gods do not speak to us openly, nor let us answer. Till that word can be dug out of us, why should they hear the babble that we think we mean? How can they meet us face to face till we have faces?
When I first read this quote a few years ago, it knocked the wind out of me. I still think about it OFTEN.
The most terrifying thing that could happen to anyone: to have to stand there and hear, from someone who knew everything, the worst you’ve ever thought about yourself.
This quote sliced me in half the first time I read it. Maybe within the context of the book it hurts even more, but…that’s probably the case with all these.
It was, he thought, the difference between being dragged into the arena to face a battle to the death and walking into the arena with your head held high. Some people, perhaps, would say that there was little to choose between the two ways, but Dumbledore knew – and so do I, thought Harry, with a rush of fierce pride, and so did my parents – that there was all the difference in the world.
Basically this is a grander version of Dumbledore’s “it’s our choices that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities” and IT GETS ME HYPED and makes me emotional. Harry 😭
And so I try to be kind to everything I see, and in everything I see, I see him.
Over 700 pages and this quote sapped the life out of me.
BONUS QUOTE because I have no control and this is from a play not a book anyway. I saw a production my friend was in and it blew me away.
There is always something left to love. And if you ain’t learned that, you ain’t learned nothing. Have you cried for that boy today? I don’t mean for yourself and for the family ’cause we lost the money. I mean for him: what he been through and what it done to him. Child, when do you think is the time to love somebody the most? When they done good and made things easy for everybody? Well then, you ain’t through learning – because that ain’t the time at all.
Obviously I love pain, huh. Anyway, what are some of your favorite quotes? I want to know!!
These are all really good quoted. I have never read An Arrows Flight but that quote got me!

I’ve never heard of An Arrow’s Flight but that quote rocks!
Harry Potter! I didn’t even think to go through my favorite HP quotes! That one is killer.

I don’t think it’s a very well known book, but it’s about Greek mythology so of course I scouted it out. I just lent it to Rachel, actually!
There should just be a whole separate post for top Harry Potter quotes honestly.

THAT C.S. LEWIS QUOTE WOW WOW WOW OK adding this to my TBR right now. I’ve never given C.S. Lewis too much thought because I couldn’t get into the Narnia books when I was younger and I always forget he wrote lots of other things.
I can’t!! wait!!! to start An Arrow’s Flight ahhhhh. Maybe this weekend if I finish War and Peace by then.
AND THAT HP QUOTE AND ESPECIALLY THAT LITTLE LIFE QUOTE I AM IN PAIN

I KNOW RIGHT. Till We Have Faces was NOT what I was expecting at all (I’m also not crazy about Narnia, I read maybe two or three of them but couldn’t get into it), and it’s kind of confusing but once I finished I was blown away. But lol I also always forget how many other books C.S. Lewis has, and he has a LOT.
I CAN’T WAIT TO SEE WHAT YOU THINK OF AN ARROW’S FLIGHT!!
Honestly I could just quote all of Harold’s parts and cry forever.

OH COOL that is great to hear you also weren’t into Narnia and still liked some of his other books, because I feel like people who read his other books are usually obsessed with Narnia hahaha. I know I think I read 3 of them as well?? Maybe I was too young idk but I could not get into them at all.

I tried reading them once when I was younger and then a little bit later, but still wasn’t feeling it. Till We Have Faces is not kiddish at all though, and I read it because I wanted to read every book with Greek mythology I could get my hands on, and it wasn’t really what I was expecting, but I closed it and was like….DANG. I think it also has to do with the fact that I expect every retelling to be like Song of Achilles, which more closely follows the myth, which…this does not, and neither was An Arrow’s Flight, and I read them all in succession lol. But GREAT BOOKS.

Omg it’s so crazy because I have scoured the internet for all those Greek mythology retelling lists but this one has COMPLETELY flown under the radar for me, like I don’t think I’d even heard of it?? Even An Arrow’s Flight was on my radar and that one’s super obscure HMMM. Tbh as much as I adore TSOA I have a soft spot for the retellings that are flat-out weird, like… you’re writing about gods and goddesses so might as well just go for it I guess???

I don’t even remember where I heard of iit, but I think I saw it on someone’s Greek Mythology list??? Or it came up as a rec on Amazon or something. But it’s definitely different than any other retelling I’ve read…very allegorical, which, even though I haven’t read much of C.S. Lewis’ stuff, seems to be his style and didn’t surprise me at all.

Wow, these are some amazing quotes! I love the C. S. Lewis one (and I’m ashamed that I haven’t read that book yet 😦 A) and the one from An Arrow’s Flight sounds so heartbreaking!

I definitely recommend Till We Have Faces!! Admittedly it’s a bit confusing, but I find that sometimes with C.S. Lewis’ works. Still very brilliant though!

I’m the same way. There are still times I’ll read one of his works and feel like I’m only just now understanding it. Still, I can’t wait to read Till We Have Faces!

I’m actually reading the first book of The Space Trilogy right now and it definitely confuses me, but I’m enjoying it!

I’ve only read the second one of the trilogy (I didn’t know it was a trilogy when I picked it up 😓). I remember enjoying it, but I had to read certain parts several times before I actually got it.

WOW THIS IS SUCH A GREAT LIST! I haven’t read An Arrow’s Flight obviously, but this quote makes me want to so badly! I will definitely be checking my library and then used bookstores for this!!! And I love that your A Little Life quote is so short and yet so moving. OMG THAT ADAM QUOTE THOUGH. SUCH a great one, and I would 100% read that dissertation comparing the two!! Excellent choices!

I 1000% recommend An Arrow’s Flight, it’s so depressing and strange lol.
I think when I first read that quote in the church scene with Ronan I screamed internally because it was so perfect. Then again I basically screamed internally throughout that whole scene. And all the scenes with them.

SO MUCH INTERNAL SCREAMING. Or at the very least moaning noises, and needing to put the book down and breathe for a moment!
Depressing and strange usually works for me, so I’m glad I was able to find a copy!
