Reread, Rewrite, Burn Tag

I saw this tag on Kristen Kraves Books and thought it looked fun, so I gave it a whirl. I randomized my books on Goodreads and this is what I got!

THE RULES:

• Randomly choose 3 books
• For each group, decide which book to burn, which one to rewrite, and which to reread (like Marry, Boff, Kill).
• Repeat until you completed three rounds (or six) (or however many you want to do).

REREAD: A Conjuring of Light FOR SURE. Love that book.

REWRITE: I read A Northern Light a veeeery long time ago when I was maybe 14 or 15, and to be honest I don’t really remember what it’s even about, but I do remember that I thought it was just okay and I’d expected more from it. So, rewrite.

BURN: I wasn’t a huge fan of the later Series of Unfortunate Events books, and since this is book 11 in the series, I’m gonna have to say bye, Grim Grotto. I’d have to rewrite some plot points in earlier books before I even got to this one to make it work, so I’m burning this out of laziness mostly.

REREAD: Listen, I freaking loved The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo books, but I don’t think I’d ever be able to read them again because that’s some heavy stuff. Magnus Chase is far more pleasant (and I love it), so I must go with Ship of the Dead.

REWRITE: I’ve now realized I’ve walked myself into a corner here, because no way in heck could I ever write or rewrite the complexity that is The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, and I want to burn Cursed Child to the ground, but….THE CURSE CHILD WAS SO WRONG I WANT TO TAKE IT INTO MY OWN HANDS AND MAKE IT RIGHT.

BURN: Forgive me, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo….I love you and I’m sorry you get the short end of the stick, but some books are too good to rewrite, and some must only be read once.

REREAD: I mean…I wouldn’t really care to, but I’ll go with The Fellowship of the Ring. Tolkien’s writing is a bit dense for me, but I read this forever ago so it may not hurt to give it another try. Maybe I’d feel differently?

REWRITE: Some parts of All The Bright Places bored me and were a bit preachy, so maybe I’d tone down the pointedness of it. I also wasn’t a huge fan of how the book set me up for the ending. REWRITE, though I’d feel bad because I could tell how much this book was a reflection of the author’s own experiences in her author’s note.

BURN: Look, I know Animal Farm is an important book and all, but I’m rating these purely on my own enjoyment and while it’d be a quicker reread than Fellowship…..I must choose burn. I wasn’t a huge fan of it in high school when I read it, RIP.

REREAD: OH GOSH okay I’m going to have to go with The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian. I wouldn’t mind rereading Neil Gaiman, but there’s something I wouldn’t mind rewriting about his book. And it would be plain wrong for me to touch Part-Time Indian. AND I very much enjoyed it.

REWRITE: I really enjoyed The Ocean at the End of the Lane, but I would have liked the fantasy to be a bit more solid. It felt a bit too….out there, though I really enjoyed the creepiness of this book. That would all stay.

BURN: I liked The Girl on the Train but I didn’t love it, and it’s my least favorite of these three, so, farewell.

REREAD: Everything I Never Told You. I’LL REREAD IT A MILLION TIMES OVER.

REWRITE: The Gilded Years was a lot drier than I had expected it to be. It’s about a black girl that passes as a white girl in order to go to all white, all-girl college in the late 1800s…but a lot of the chapters were too wordy and frivolous and I did a lot of skimming as a started to realize what would be important and what wouldn’t. I’d tighten it up a bit, maybe add a bit more…plot.

BURN: Impossible was a bit too strange for me and was not a very enjoyable read.  BURN.

REREAD: Order of the Phoenix. I’ll always reread you, Harry ❤ (unless you’re in Cursed Child but that doesn’t count).

REWRITE: I love City of Thieves dearly and wouldn’t not change much, buuut I do remember feeling like some parts dragged a tiny bit, even though it was such a tiny book. This book’s brilliant so I would be better off not touching it, but….with these choices I’ve gotta.

BURN: Bye, Little Women. I thought this book was just okay, anyway.
