December Wrap Up

december wrapu up

Hey guys! December was an interesting month of reading because I felt like I kept weaving in out and out of a slump, which resulted the month beginning in fun and dark fantasy and ending in YA contemporary romance. But overall, it was a rather fantastic month of reading, so I’m happy.

The Bear and the Nightingale by Katherine Arden ★★★★★ – favorite of the month!
This book was one of my favorites I read this year. It was warm and cozy and frigidly cold, and I loved the balance of history and magic and how they worked together in the plot. But most of all, I loved the main character, Vasya. I very much look forward to picking up the second book in this series soon! Full review.

Howl’s Moving Castle by Diana Wynn Jones
This book was a fun, charming, and whimsical ride. I loved the crazy plot, the obnoxiously lovable characters, and the sweetness and the humor of this book. Full review.

The Monstrumologist by Rick Yancey ★
This book was horrifying and I LOVED IT. If you’re into very real, terrifying human-eating monsters, you’ll like this, and if you’re not, you might just like it anyway, because I did. Most of all, though, I loved the characters. This book was fascinating. Full review.

Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine by Gale Honeyman ★★★★☆
Eleanor was one of the most memorable characters I read this year, and this book was one of the funniest. It also touches upon darkness, friendship, and kindness, and it was a wonderful read that made me laugh out loud. Full review.

Words in Deep Blue by Cath Crowley ★★★ 1/2
This book was a sweet friends-to-lovers romance that touches deeply on the topic of grief. It was a quick, gripping read that I finished in a day, its only downfall being that I felt the ending was a bit rushed and glazed over some details I’d have liked it to resolve more deeply. Full review

Foolish Hearts by Emma Mills ★★★★☆
This book was a such a surprising, delightful read with very sweet romances and friendships, and I loved how the plot touched upon fandom. I hadn’t expected to enjoy this book so much, and it’s definitely a cute YA contemporary I’d recommend. Full review.

January!

YOU GUYS we are over a week into January and I have yet to read a single book D:

I blame my friend who, for the last few weeks, has kept saying to me, “Steph, I need to come over and have a Music Day with you.” My friend is a big music guy, and the two of us have ‘Music Days’ which consists of him introducing to me to a particular band he thinks I’ll like, giving me a basic rundown of the members and their history, and then we spend hours watching music videos on YouTube. He knows I am a pop music/boyband junkie, and he finally got me into something I’d always had a feeling was inevitable: k-pop.

In particular, the Korean pop band BTS, who are currently taking over the world, but more alarmingly they are taking over ME. I really wish I was able to enjoy things in moderation, but I’ve spent about 2093820 hours listening to their music and watching YouTube videos and basically scouring the internet about them this week. Here is me thanking my friend for dragging me into the black hole with him:

So please forgive me if I don’t end up posting as many book reviews as usual this week. However, I have tentatively started Pachinko by Min Jin Lee because…..Korea.

BUT I am participating in a buddy read of the Lymond Chronicles with Chelsea, Rachel, and Hadeer this month, and am looking forward to getting into that!

So 2018 has gotten off on an interesting start for me. How has your first week of 2018 been so far? What are you reading? Do you like BTS and if so PLEASE TALK TO ME ABOUT THEM.

  1. Omg LOL at you reading Pachinko because of BTS that’s hilarious but I WILL TAKE IT. I actually haven’t listened to BTS because I really only ever have listened to English language groups?? But there is a 1D shaped hole in my heart so……. eyes emoji

    • Like I’ve been in the mood for NOTHING but then I was like 👀 Pachinko. I’ve read the first three chapters and it’s so good already, I can tell it’s going to get painful though D:

I never really delved into music in other languages except a few Spanish and French songs, but this is the first time I’ve truly Immersed myself because I am pop music TRASH. But it’s also so different from any other bands I’ve been into because they’re all just so good and polite?? No crazy drama and babies on the side?? I was hesitant to give a new boyband my heart but I’M HAVING A BLAST. I’ve also never really been into dancing, but their synchronization mesmerizes me. If I went and watched a 1D video right now I’d be like why are they just standing around??? DANCE NIALL.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hmE9f-TEutc So my friend showed me this video first because he knows me too well and started me out with the museumy aesthetic one, and I admit at first I was kinda 👀 this is strange, but then we watched it like 6 more times to try to puzzle it out because it’s also basically the most confusing music video I’ve seen ever, and suddenly I was HOOKED. And there’s 7 of them it’s wild.

      • Omg YAY I’m so glad you’re reading it I HOPE YOU LOVE IT AND GET READY FOR THE PAIN

Omg I know I guess I listen to a few French songs, but I tried to listen to Italian music when I was learning Italian and quickly came to the conclusion that Italian music is pretty terrible so that was that.

“DANCE NIALL” LOL. Okay this may just be exactly the kind of lighthearted nonsense I need right now…. I can’t watch it at the moment because I’m at work lolol but I will GIVE THIS A SHOT WISH ME LUCK

      • I’VE READ TO PAGE 100 I THINK I’M GETTING SOMEWHERE. Omg when a book starts with a forbidden teenage pregnancy I’m already D: D:

BTS is truly lighthearted nonsense and while I loved 1D to death, BTS does not have quite the level of drama going on in their fandom and I’M LIVING.

  2. Seems like you read so many good books in December! I heard so many good things about Eleanor Oliphant and The Bear and the Nightingale. But I’ve always wanted to read Howl’s Moving Castle! I loved the movie ❤

  3. I’m so glad you’re reading Pachinko and too funny that the reason is because of BTS! You know, I live in one of my city’s two Koreatowns if you ever want to visit… just saying. 😉

  4. I am in the same boat as you where I haven’t finished reading a book this month. I feel like I keep dipping in and out of a book slump so I’ve been trudging through Code Name Verity. Most nights I don’t read at all and some nights I only read ten pages at a time. It’s been awful! 😩

    I feel like I’m the only one who isn’t a stan for BTS – I’m more a fan of the girl KPOP groups like 2NE1. God I miss them… 😭 😭 😭

    • It’s so hard to get out of a slump!! I keep trying to read but I’m just not in the mood to concentrate. I think the winter also makes me slump-y. I still have yet to really get into a book, too!

I really want to explore more Kpop groups once I’m a little more over BTS, lol….especially the girl ones!! There’s just SO MANY I need to take my time, hahahah. Will I ever read a book again???

  5. I finished The Bear and the Nightingale a few days ago and adored it. Vasya is everything I ever wanted in a character and I’m so happy we get to see what she’s gonna do next in the 2nd book of the series 😍 I also adored Howl’s Moving Castle and I’m so happy that you enjoyed it, too!
And omg you like BTS! I love them and I can’t tell you how many hours I spent just watch their music videos 😂♥️

Lol YES I’ve spent so many hours watching BTS videos!! I don’t know what it is, their dancing mesmerizes me hahaha, and they’re all just so funny!

      • I want to get to it sometime before the winter is over, so I hope to get to it soon! Maybe in February.

Blood Sweat and Tears is my favorite song and video as well!! It was the first one I watched and was hooked right away, I’ve watched a million times now, lol. Do you have a favorite member?? Mine is Jimin 🙂

    • Thank you!! You too! I think Bear and the Nightingale is one of the most magical books I’ve read, more from the atmosphere than anything else, so I hope you really enjoy that aspect of it!
