Top 5 Tuesday: Books I’ve Read because of Blogging

Parmesan Cheese (1).png

Ahhh it has been a while since I have done a Top 5 Tuesday! This was a really fun topic, and I’m glad I got a chance to do it today. Even though I’ve been a bit quieter on my blog this year, the blogging world continues to inspire me to try books I never would have. These are just a few of them! I tried to pick books that I most likely would never would have picked up on my own.

This is one of my favorite books – and series – ever, but I probably wouldn’t have picked it up if I hadn’t seen it so raved about when I first started blogging. Simply because the cover isn’t exactly my style or something that would have attracted me on it’s own (though I love it now). I’m glad I gave it a chance, though, because I love this series and its characters with all my heart.

Top 5 Tuesday: Series I Won’t be Finishing

Parmesan Cheese.png

So I’m pretty sure it’s been 23948329 years since I’ve done a Top 5 Tuesday. But I’m BACK AT IT. And I love this topic.

When it comes down to it, I think the biggest reason for me not to continue a series is the characters. I can suffer through the most mundane, nonsensical of plots if I like the characters and care about where they go (i.e. why I read all 13 books of the Series of Unfortunate Events). That said, all of the following series had characters that just did not enter my heart for one reason or another. I didn’t even find all of these books bad. It’s just that sometimes, the only thing that follows book one is a Wikipedia summary of book two.

Top 5 Tuesday: Books I don’t talk about enough

TOP 5 FALL (10).png

Hello friends, I’m not dead! I have not posted for….a bit of a while, but my love of books lives on. And after a year of blogging I think I’ve needed to recharge my batteries with some other media for a bit. But this Top 5 Tuesday looked fun, and it was one of the easier ones to write- there are many books I don’t talk about often enough, but these jumped out at me right away.

I usually like to stay pretty loose in my goals and TBRs and whatnot, but this year I actually find myself with some specific resolutions! A lot of it is getting to things I’ve really been meaning to get to for ages….hopefully this year will be the year!

I read so many new and amazing books this year, and by so many authors I had never read before, or even heard of! These are some of my absolute favorites, who’ve written some of my new absolute favorite books. The prompt said I could pick 10, yet somehow I only managed 9. There are about 2 weeks left in the year, maybe I’ve yet to discover the tenth…..

Anyway- my top authors! (Not in any particular order):

Top 5 Wednesday: Authors I’d like to Write Like

TOP 5 WEDNESDAY (1).png

This was a surprisingly difficult post to write! I think it’s because writing about writing can seem rather daunting- I want to write as well as the person I’m talking about! I did not manage to achieve that, but I think I did manage to find some authors who I really admire for certain aspects of their writing and who have inspired me. I love to write fiction myself, and reading great authors has the biggest affect on how I write my own stories.

Top 5 Wednesday: Problematic Characters

TOP 5 WEDNESDAYproblematic characters.png

My first Top 5 Wednesday! Coming in a little late, but…better late than never right? Top 5 Wednesday is hosted by Sam from Thoughts on Tomes, and you can check out the Goodreads group to see more topics for this month!

Problematic Faves: Characters you don’t want to love, but you can’t help liking.

I must preface with the fact that…I’ve hated the word problematic used to describe people since it started coming into fashion in like, 2010. Who is NOT problematic, is my question?? How do you have a good story without characters that cause problems, or are problems, or represent the problems of the real world? The way it’s used as a blanket-term niggles at me. One can call Kaz Brekker problematic. One can call Winnie the Pooh problematic. Does the word have the same meaning when describing both of them? I….would be interested in an analysis, if so.

For this list I chose characters I genuinely did not like at first, and none of which I’d ever want to be real people or meet in real life, none of whose actions or world-views I necessarily approve of or agree with, but in the end…they earned some part of my heart. I appreciated them and I learned something from them – perhaps something good, perhaps something bad – and I felt for them. I didn’t want to….BUT I DID.

THESE were DIFFICULT to choose. I could probably debate over this post for hours, but in the end I had to go with some of these. I’m not promising anything inspiration here, just things that really punched me in the gut when I read them and that I’ve thought about for a long time I’ve finished the book. So let’s go!

This was a fun one, I loved sorting my Goodreads books by author and seeing who I’d read most! To be honest I’m not surprised who I came out with at all, and that most of them are series writers.
