Scarlet Benoit from The Lunar Chronicles
I feel like I always talk about the other Lunar Chronicles girls more, so I gotta give Scarlet some love and credit where credit is due. Scarlet is fierce and fiery, and I love the image of her in her red hoodie holding that gun. She is one very fierce lady.
I’m just going to roll with this Greek Gods theme.
I love everything about this book. I’ve read it twice, the first time because I love Greek Mythology and had heard great things about it. The second time I read it, last summer, it inspired me to stop halfway through and read the entire Iliad for the first time, and then I finished it in light of that. Needless to say, I was super obsessed with Greek Mythology last June. It broke my heart in different ways both times I read it.
Okay the truth here is…I do not read much nonfiction. I spend my time in fiction, alas. I’ve read this a few times, though, and it’s hard not to appreciate. Very moving, awful stuff. Perhaps it is rather ironic that this is under Athena? Or perhaps not, because there’s wisdom in speaking up, keeping history alive, and being kind to our fellow humans. I actually visited Auschwitz once and…I still don’t know what to say about it.
This is indeed a book I do adore. I love the story and the characters and it had such an effect on me. I loved the twist it had. Bone Gap is a little weird and it is definitely on my recommend list.
I know this is a play, etc., but listen. I could rant for 18 years about why everything in this play is wrong. I went into it with extremely low expectations, I went into it detached and prepared, and yet somehow it managed to defy them, to run my expectations to the ground and through the earth’s crust. It violated so many rules of the HP universe, it disregarded so many characterizations, and it was just a messy, discombobulated, ridiculous story. It felt like complete and utter fan service and it was just…so bad. I honestly felt a little betrayed by JKR when she said it was canon (which I do not accept).
I’ll only give it points for Scorpius. He wasn’t bad. But someone explain to me why he’s a Slytherin??
Bonus quote that haunts me, said by LUDO BAGMAN of all people: “A dog – he’s transfigured a stone into a dog – dog diggity Cedric Diggory – you are a doggy dynamo.”
WHAT. WHY.
I mean, it was a groundbreaking book for me. I’d never read anything like it. It was absolutely beautiful- but not the pretty kind of beautiful, the painful kind of beautiful. It was such a heightened experience of…everything, really. It broke ground and it broke MY HEART.
I can’t help but steal Birdie’s answer because the Raven Cycle covers are so pretty, particularly Blue Lily, Lily Blue and The Raven King. The Raven King is my favorite, and when I first bought it I loved to just…look at it. I love the swirly blues. These books are definitely artsy inside and out.
I actually did fall asleep reading this book. Multiple times. I held out hope it would get interesting, but…this book just didn’t do it for me.
I read this book like I was possessed. I sped through through the bulk of it at the speed of light one afternoon and my eyes were literally stinging by the time I reached the end. It was also SUCH a stressful book…it wore me out, lol. I loved it.

I actually haven’t read Night which is so shameful – I feel like I’m one of the only people who’s never read that book??? I really need to fix that.
OH MY GOD that Cursed Child quote!!!! HOW IS THAT REAL??? I stand by my decision to never read that play unless I get drunk enough.

Omg I love so many of your choices!! The Secret History is like, such a peak debut. And Agnes truly needs to win all the badass awards.
I had to read Night in high school and in college! Definitely worth a read, and very short, it shouldn’t take you long at all.
I KNOW RIGHT. That quote encapsulates how ridiculous that whole play is. Like why. When I was reading it I kept taking pictures of all the ridiculous quotes I was reading and sending them to my friend who had already finished it because I could not handle it alone. It’s so terrible I was laughing out loud at it because it was either that or die inside.

That is literally how I got through Gone Without a Trace – I was livetexting like three different people and sending them photos of particularly cringe-worthy passages. Which is always fun, but at the end of the day, if a book isn’t meant to be humorous and your reader is laughing out loud, you’ve got a pretty huge problem.

Yikes, I’ve never read The Cursed Child and that doesn’t exactly make me want to lol! I feel like from what I’ve heard it might work better as a play, so I would still be interested in seeing that someday. I’m honestly pretty baffled that this book exists at all given what I’ve heard though.
Oooh I’ve had the Sakavic books recommended to me by a close friend. Are they still enjoyable even if you’re really not a sports person?
I’ve taken a holocaust course in university and read other books, but I’ve never actually read Night! One of these days I’ll do it.

I love the books you picked for this tag- I was close to choosing the Shades of Magic series for beautiful cover as well, they’re so nice to look at. And I really need to read The Bear and the Nightingale, I’ve heard so many good things about it!
As ridiculous as the plot of Cursed Child is, I 100% think it would be more enjoyable as a stage performance than just reading it. It’s very wacky and definitely some of the action that seems strange picturing it in my head is probably done very well in performance. So despite my feelings on it, if I had the chance, I think I’d go see it. But I really don’t understand how JKR agreed to it….it breaks so many rules.
I’m not into sports at all, and I loved the Sakavic books! They’re kind of like The Raven Cycle in that they’re all about the characters. The plot is a little crazy and the sport is made up by her and I actually enjoyed reading the sport parts, which I did not expect at all. They’re rather brutal and twisted books but I loved them.
Night is definitely worth a read! I’ve been requited to read it twice…interesting how they didn’t how you read it in the university class!
